Today, May 29, 2026, Professor Valter Longo received the Amadeo Peter Giannini Award for Research in Genoa. This recognition celebrates decades of scientific work and research in the fields of aging, nutrition, and healthy longevity.

The Ceremony in Genoa

The award ceremony took place this morning at the Sala Trasparenza of the Liguria Regional Government headquarters. The event was organized by the Amadeo Peter Giannini Study Center in collaboration with the Genoa Chamber of Commerce and the Liguria Region, under the patronage of GLFC, La Mia Liguria and Portofino Days – International Fiction Festival.

The Program

The morning began with institutional greetings delivered by Marco Bucci, President of the Liguria Region, Luigi Attanasio, President of the Genoa Chamber of Commerce, and Cristina Bolla, President of the Amadeo Peter Giannini Study Center and GLFC. This was followed by the screening of a commemorative video highlighting Professor Longo’s work and the official presentation of the award.

The Reasons for the Award

The Amadeo Peter Giannini Award for Research was presented to Professor Valter Longo in recognition of the excellence and scientific innovation that have distinguished his remarkable international career in biogerontology and longevity research.

Director of the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles and Founder of the nonprofit organizations the Valter Longo Foundation and the Create Cures Foundation, Professor Longo has transformed our understanding of the biological mechanisms of aging. Through pioneering discoveries, his laboratory was the first to identify genes involved in aging processes, demonstrating how their modulation can help prevent and slow the onset and progression of major age-related diseases.

His groundbreaking research on calorie restriction and, in particular, the conception and development of the Fasting-Mimicking Diet, has opened new therapeutic and preventive frontiers. His clinical studies have shown how targeted dietary interventions can promote cellular regeneration, protect healthy tissues during chemotherapy treatments, and reduce risk factors associated with chronic diseases.

Named by Time Magazine among the 50 most influential people in health and recognized as one of the most cited scientists in the international scientific community, Professor Longo combines scientific rigor with a deep humanitarian and philanthropic commitment: making health, prevention and integrative therapies accessible to everyone, while educating present and future generations about healthy longevity.

Valter Longo’s Remarks

“Receiving the Amadeo Peter Giannini Award is a profound honor. It brings me back to my roots, to Genoa, where I spent such an important part of my life and where my first curiosities and desire to understand how the world works began. Longevity science should not remain confined to laboratories. Part of the commitment and fulfillment of scientists is to translate it into practical and accessible tools. Like Giannini, the purpose of my work and of my Foundations in Italy and the United States is to place knowledge and expertise at the service of everyone, not just a few, so that a long and healthy life is not a privilege, but a real possibility for all.”
